Microgreens and hydroponics

*singing* I beg your pardon, I did order you a herb garden….

I have been growing microgreens on and off for some years but this year I started to invent a system of my own with the combined features of the systems i have tried before. The goal was to make a much more versatile system. The new system is a multi purpose system where you can  grow microgreens but also cultivate sallad or grow garlic cloves.

Micro Garden System

A hydroponic system with endless possibilites. The system is printed in PLA, an enviromental friendly choice that still will not break down for many years to come. The plastic is made from shugarcanes and corn, with no crude oil or stuff like that.
All pictures here is in black, white or gray. But you could order yours in any color of your choice, but it will take a longer time as I need to order the color if so.

The base

The base

The first and basic piece of the system is the tray where the water goes. It has a turnable gate so you can change the waterflow. This piece has been carefully refined through many iterations, leading to the design I use today.

Tray - Rockwool

Tray - Rockwool

One of the trays that goes into the system is a tray with 25mm slots for rockwool cubes so you can grow bigger stuff like lettuce and herbs.

Tray - Herbs

Tray - Herbs

Buying fresh herbs at the store? No problem, we have a special tray so you can plant the herbs directly into the hydrosystem. Be prepared, these plants drink a lot of water!

Tray - Open

Tray - Open

This tray is designed to be able to grow small seeds for example Chia seeds. The tray has a mesh at the bottom, but I recommend using someting similar to paper towels at the bottom. Just lightly dampen it and put the seeds of your choice directly on it. The crop will grow straight trough the paper with ease.

Tray - Multipurpose

Tray - Multipurpose

This tray is a multipurpose tray. It can be used for garlic cloves to harvest the stems, or for growing yellow peas. The individual compartments makes it easier to get the garlic cloves to stand, and it prevents mold from spreading when cultivating peas etc.

Tray - open high

Tray - open high

This tray is also a kind of multi purpose tray. you could put dirt in it if you like and grow anything really, or you could just put your bought herbs from the store in the tray, if you buy the ones in square pots for an example,

Water container

Water container

As I'm going for an eco-friendly system, I wanted to repurpose regular PET bottles. The best bottles are those that are a little bit more sturdy, like Pepsi or Loka Crush. The shelf can be found on the for sale page if you are interested in that too.

Lid

Lid

When growing microgreens or peas, you should have a lid on your seeds, this makes the crop grow faster. The seeds should not be exposed to light for the first couple of days. When the seeds start pushing up the lid it is time to remove it. The seeds will look yellow and boring at first, but they will turn green in a day or two!

Ledlight

Ledlight

The ledlight is an epic addon if you want to have your garden somewere where the sun dont reach it. But, real sun is better than any ringlight you can ever find, so the best thing is to use it as a complement to real light.

Important tips

  1. When groing micro greens, always wash your hands first, and preferably use plastic gloves. The greens  are extremely sensitive to contamination.
  2. Never wash the system in the washing machine. The plastic might warp. If you do wash it, the washing machine should be on the coldest setting, like 45°C.
  3. Use the system in any way you like. Try it, experiment with it, have fun with it!
  4. If you do use it, take some nice pictures and send them to me. I would love to see them and use them on this page.

The system components

The components are still under developement, so there might be more trays in the future. I also tweak stuff as my testers come with information of what they have found out.
